What does iVigilo mean ?Vigilo is latin and means "remain awake / be awake / watch / provide for / care for by watching / be vigilant".
iVigilo is a family of multimedia Apps for iOS and OS X aimed at creative minds.
What is iVigilo Alert Centre ?iVigilo Alert Centre is a seperate app for Apple Macintosh computers which allows to manage digital web camera's (built-in or networked MJPEG cameras), record each cameras signal either by manual, time lapse or motion detection method through the built-in DVR (Digital Video Recorder). The iVigilo Alert Centre has a unique two-way communication with a iVigilo Dashboard device which allows for the delivery of alerts, live camera streams and recordings to the Dashboard.
The iVigilo Alert Centre requires an iVigilo Dashboard app on an iOS device to function.
Currently iVigilo Alert Centre is only available for Apple Macintosh computers.
What is iVigilo Dashboard ?The iVigilo Dashboard is an app for iPhone, ipod Touch and iPad which allows for full camera control, one channel DVR with manual, timelapse and motion detection modus and alerting in combination with the iVigilo Alert Centre.

What is iVigilo Smartcam Pro ?iVigilo® Smartcam Pro is your own mobile camera security system.

Does iVigilo Dashboard work on 3G networks ?Yes. Unlike most other camera solutions, iVigilo supports WiFi as well as 3G networks. Some functions like live camera viewing or the viewing of recorded events can use a lot of data. Please note this while roaming on 3G. Back

How do I know that my system is working properly ?When you start iVigilo Dashboard you immediately come into the Glimpse view. This is the view with the fingerprint.
One of the Glimpse views is the network status view. This looks like the view below:
The Network status screen is divided in four parts:
1) iVigilo Dashboard
- "Network OK" means Dashboard has a correct IP address and is connected to the iVigilo Rendezvous server; In this case the status bar is green;
- "Local network IP" is the IP address which the Dashboard device has received from the local router or mobile operator;
- "Global network IP" is the IP address with which the Dashboard can be reached from the Internet;
- "Mac address" is the mac-address of the Dashboard device;
2) iVigilo Alert Centre
- "Alert Centre: connected" in combination with green status bar means the Alert Centre is correctly connected to the iVigilo Rendezvous server;
- "Data: connected" in combination with green status bar means the Alert Centre data sockets are correctly connected to the iVigilo Rendezvous server;
-"Local network IP" is the IP address from the local network;
- "Global network IP" is the external IP address with which the Alert Centre can be reached from the Internet;
3) iVigilo Rendezvous server
- "Status OK" in combination with a green status bar means that the iVigilo Rendezvous server is up and running normally;
4) Refresh button
Sometimes it is necessary to use the refresh buttons to reestablish a link for the different devices and services. Just push and hold the buttons until the IPs are refreshed.
How do I install iVigilo Dashboard?iVigilo consists of iVigilo Dashboard running on your mobile device and iVigilo Alert Centre installed and running on your desktop or laptop computer.
Dashboard can be downloaded and installed from the Apple AppStore directly on your iPhone, ipod Touch or iPad. Once installed just click on the icon. If it is the first time you use any of the iVigilo products you will need to create an account on our Rendezvous server. Just follow the instructions on screen. Once you have done this, the mobile device is ready to be used. If you already have an iVigilo account, just register your device and you are good to go.
The iVigilo Alert Centre can be downloaded for free here from this website. Just download it, double click and follow the instructions on screen. If it is the first time you use any of the iVigilo products you will need to create an account on our Rendezvous server. Just follow the instructions on screen. Once you have done this the mobile device is ready to be used. If you already have an iVigilo account, just register your device and you are good to go.
What is portforwarding and do I need to do this ?In case you want to communicate between your Dashboard and your Alert Centre OUTSIDE of your own home of office network, you will need to do port forwarding.
Port forwarding is the process that your router or firewall uses to sort the right kind of network data to the right port. Computers and routers use ports as a way to organize network data. Different types of data, such as web sites, file downloads, and online games, are each assigned a port number. By using port forwarding, the router or firewall sends the correct data to the correct place.
A firewall protects your computer by blocking unauthorized information. If a firewall blocked all the incoming and outgoing data, the computer would be unable to access the Internet. When you want some data to go through your firewall, and you want it sent to a specific location, you can set up port forwarding. Port forwarding gives the firewall instructions about which types of data are allowed and how they should be directed.
If you have multiple computers on your network, chances are that they do not all need all the data that comes into the network. Port forwarding allows you to send the relevant data to the computer that will use it. If you have a web server hosting your website, and a second computer hosting an online game, port forwarding will make sure that each computer receives the data it needs, without being bogged down with data intended for the other computer.
Information on the Internet is associated with a port. Web pages, for example, are typically assigned port 80. File transfer protocol (FTP), often used for downloading and uploading files, typically uses port 21. Online games may use a number of different port numbers, but often choose numbers in the thousands.
This means practically that you will need to tell your router that the computer running the Alert Centre app, can be reached by the Dashboard. Or that a certain network camera you install on your own network can be reached from the Internet.
iVigilo has developed a sophisticated way to handle this port forwarding automatically for you. This works for most of the routers on the market. However some routers dont support this or have blocked auto configuration options. In this case you need to set the ports yourself.
iVigilo needs to have two portnumbers assigned in order to work properly. These are portnumber 55330 and portnumber 55340.
The website www.portforward.com is the largest resource on the Internet on the topic. For many routers you find there guidance on how to setup your specific router.
Why do I have the error "Network: alerter cannot connect" and an orange Glimpse ?The iVigilo Dashboard and the Alert Centre can only communicate with each other through an exchange of IP addresses with our Rendezvous server in the cloud. This Rendezvous feature will take care that from any place in the world you will be able to have communication between your Dashboard and your Alert Centre. In order to establish this vital iVigilo communications link it is necessary that two ports in your router are assigned to the iVigilo Alert Centre computer: TCP port 55330 and port 55340.
In most cases iVigilo Alert Centre will auto configure the necessary port settings in the router and establish a secure direct link between Dashboard and Alert Centre without the need of any user intervention. In some cases this auto portforwarding function doesn't work and you need to do the port settings manually.
You can find instructions on port forwarding normally in the documentation which comes with your router. Alternatively we can suggest to go to www.portforward.com, which is a large knowledge resource on the subject of portforwarding. Back
Which platforms does iVigilo Dashboard support ?iVigilo Dashboard runs on Apple iOS supporting iPhone, ipod Touch and iPad. The iPad is supported in native HD mode.
Can I use iVigilo Dashboard without Alert Centre ?No. iVigilo Dashboard is used to work in cooperation with the Alert Centre. The Alert Centre is responsible for camera management, contains a one channel DVR which can be remotely controlled by the Dashboard and is the main hub for managing alerts. Back
What are the main functions of the Dashboard ?
iVigilo Dashboard has the following main functions which can be accessed from the main screens on your iOS device: Glimpse, Camera, Alert, Alerter and Setup.
The Glimpse main screen and its subscreens for Network status, Dashboard system, Alert Centre system and Version provide you valuable data to assess the status of the various components of iVigilo.
In the Camera view you control the actual selected camera stream. From here you can:
- SELECT the active camera by flipping the screen to the left or the right;
- MANUAL start recording the active camera signal by pushing the M-button;
- Start a TIMELAPSE recording of the active camera signal by pushing the Clock-button;
- Start recording on MOTION of the active camera signal by pushing the Runner button;
- Turn all recordings OFF for the active camera by pushing the Off-button;
Motion recording sensitivity and Timelapse frequency can be set in the Alerter - Remote device screen.
The Alert view shows a chronological overview of all Alerts which have been send to the Dashboard device. Each Alert generates a separate line item.
There are different types of alerts:
- Each video which is generated creates an Alert, visualized by a snapshot of the video alert;
- A Tech Alrt is generated in case some technical condition is met on the Dashboard or Alert Centre. E.g. low memory or battery.
By clicking on the line item for the Video Alert, an Alert Detail view opens up:
In this Alert Detail view you see a larger snapshot of the video scene. And you can choose three different functions from this menu:
- You can publish this Alert to Twitter by pushing the "Peoples"-button. This will send a tweet of the Alert with the snapshot picture to the Twitter account you installed on the Alert Centre;
- You can archive an Alert so that it never gets lost by pushing the "Archive box"-button; Archived items are visible since they show the Archive box in the detail view;
- You can playback the recorded video clip by pushing the "Play"-button; This will open up the iVigilo videoplayer;
The Alerter view allows you to setup the different parameters and functions for alerts. Three categories of Alerters can be chosen:
- Alerters present on your mobile device. This the device running iVigilo Dashboard;
- Alerters present on your remote device. This is the computer running iVigilo Alert Centre;
- Camera lists. These lists contain the descriptions of your cameras which you have registered; Camera lists are defined on the Alert Centre. But the actual list can be chosen from the Dashboard device.

Can I use iVigilo Alert Centre without Dashboard ?
No. The function of the iVigilo Alert Centre can only be used from the Dashboard. Without the Dashboard license the Alert Centre has little or no use. Back
Can the Alert Centre support more than one channel recording ?No. The Alert Centre has been developed to support the control (recording, motion detection etc) of only one camera signal at the same time. Camera support in iVigilo Alert Centre
Which cameras are supported by iVigilo ?iVigilo supports all built-in Mac OS cameras (iSight and other cameras which are recognized by the OS). Furthermore most of the MJPEG cameras in the market are supported natively. Models of the following brands in particular are supported directly:
Before you can use a network camera with iVigilo, you need to make sure that your camera can be accessed from the internet or from the network in your home. This will require opening a port in your router to your camera. Once this is done your camera can be immediately added to iVigilo by just specifying its IP address and optional user-id and password. Please consult your cameras and routers documentation how to do this. Back
How can I add a camera to iVigilo ?Camera's are added to use in iVigilo from the Camera setup function in the Alert Centre. This opens the Camera setup window:
Click on the + button to add a new camera line to the main window. Here you can put it in the data of your own camera or any MJPEG network camera which is freely accesible. You need to provide your own logical name, the URL address for the camera, the width and the height of the camera feed signal and if necessary a userid and a password.
Note that in case you want to access your own camera from OUTSIDE your own home or office network, than you first need to configure it in your router so that it can be accessed. You need to consult your router and camera documentation on how to do this.
Can I save my cameras to use later ?Yes. iVigilo works with so called camera scripts. A camera script is a logical collection of different cameras which you might want to use in iVigilo. So think of a camera script All, Zoos, Home, Capitals of the World. Any logical collection you want can be defined. A camera script can even be imported and exported.
Why do some cameras dont show the geographic location correctly ?iVigilo uses so called geo-ip routines to determine based on the IP-address of a camera whats its country, city, longitude and latitude is. This data is gathered in large databases which are being maintained by data provided by ISP's all over the world. Some ISP's provide no, imcomplete or even incorrect data regarding the location of an IP address. Since these databases are updated constantly, IP geodata will get better and better over time. Back
Can iVigilo Smartcam be used with the iVigilo Alert Centre ?iVigilo Smartcam will work seamlessly with the Alert Centre as an advanced IP camera. Just type in the IP address of the Smartcam in the camera management screen and your Smartcam signal can be processed by the Alert Centre.
Off course then the video signal can be recorded, monitored. And you can receive alerts in case motion is detected. Back
I cannot connect to the videostreamThe connection to the video stream is done through the browser. For access on the local network use the top line IP address. For access from outside (Internet) use the bottom-line address.
You need to also add the port number which is in the IP address lines. Otherwise you cannot access the stream ! Back
Why is sometimes the videosignal jerky ?The framerate of the video stream is dependent on different factors:
- On which device are your running iVigilo Smartcam: an iPad 2 is the fastest, followed by iPhone 4, iPodtouch and lastly the slowest device is the iPhone 3GS;
- Quality of service and speed of the WiFi network;
- Video quality selected on the iVigilo Smartcam: a high quality video stream will be slower than a low quality video stream; Back
What do the two IP address in the Camera preview screen mean ?These are the IP addresses through which you can reach the live camera stream from another browser.
The first address is your local area network address. The second address line either shows the external address and port number through which the signal can be viewed. This will show up in case iVigilo Smartcam has been able to automatically configure your router.
Otherwise it will display an explanatory line and you will need to do the port mapping to the device local network address manually in the router. Back
